Syrie turned 1 and ½ on Friday, and in my opinion she is more awesome everyday. I haven’t talked about her in some time now, so I figure I’d dedicate this post to her. Some of her favorite shows on tv right now include Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba (don’t worry, I didn’t know what Yo Gabba Gabba was until I had a toddler either) and Sponge Bob Square Pants. We DVR the first two shows every day and she usually watches an episode per night. The child loves tv. If I try getting her attention during Sesame Street , well, I might as well not because she isn’t going to respond to anything or anyone when her show is on. When she’s in the zone, that’s just it, she’s in the zone. She loves to sit with a big sippy cup full of milk or juice in her leather chair and soak up some Elmo or Brobee.
Syrie hasn’t been measured or weighed in a couple months, but I’d say she’s right around 30 lbs and pretty tall—always in at least the 95 percentile for height. Most people who don’t know her and see her are surprised to learn she’s only 18 months old. They usually suspect she’s older because of her size. As most of you know, my mother-in-law watches her at our house Tuesday-Friday and my mom watches her on Monday each week, so she doesn’t get a ton of interaction with other kids. While I do make it a point to get together with my girlfriends and their kids once a month, and David’s cousin’s daughter who is just 6 months older comes over for play dates occasionally, Syrie still doesn’t have many playmates outside of the family pet, Hermes. In February we started going to Kindermusik, a program for kids at the University of Northern Iowa intended to work with children on their fine motor skills, etc, so we attend that every Monday until the middle of May at which time they break for summer. She really enjoys class and is learning a lot, but I’ve learned a few things myself:
1.) Syrie feels the need to pet kids on the heads in class. I wonder where this comes from
2.) Syrie’s mother is a bit of a worry wart. It was advised from the very beginning that we are not to get after our children in class if they stray away from the activity. We are supposed to keep a sort of free-spirit if you will. This “free-spirit” doesn’t lie within me. I’m getting better though.
3.) I’ve got a great support, and a lot of people care about our little “fat head” as we often call her. David, my mother, my brother have all attended class with me in the past. It’s nice to let other people see her when she’s with her peers.
4.) My little girl isn’t so little any more. I watch her interacting with the other kids and I swear to god I have flash forwards of her going off to Kindergarten, High School and college. Letting her go, and become her own person is going to be harder the older she gets. I just want to protect her from everything. It’s scary to think about sometimes, but I understand that’s just part of being a parent.
Syrie’s bedtime routine is still down pat. She goes to bed around 8:30-9 most nights and we typically rock her for a minute and then she asks to go in her crib by reaching for it. She finally has a favorite stuffed animal. A gray and white kitty she got before she was born from a friend and old-coworker of mine at VGM. She loves that Key-Key as she calls it. Speaking of key-keys, she loves her kitty cat, Hermes too. He doesn’t share the same fondness of her, but at the same time he doesn’t hate her.

Some exciting news (well to me anyways) is that Syrie finally has curls!! Her hair has been pin straight for the first 17 months of her life and until the last couple weeks, I didn’t think she could really be our kid. Both David and I have naturally curly hair, and before she was born I was just sure she’d have curls. I think the humidity is part to blame, but I’m happy to say my girl has curls and they’re here to stay.
Syrie is still in diapers, but we did get a potty chair in December and I’m determined to have a good start on training by the time she’s 2. She seems to be right on schedule with most developmental things. She knows where all her body parts are and she can say the names of most of them. She knows how to show us how old she is and she knows who Mama, Dada and Syrie are-by touching us on the arm or chest. She’s a rough houser, I think she gets that from David because he plays pretty rough with her. She loves to look at herself in the mirror, have her teeth brushed and she loves to help feed Hermes-maybe some day she’ll love to change his litter box too. She’s pretty much amazing in my eyesJ All in all, things are going really well. We are staying busy, not sure if we’re as busy as last year, but busy and well enough.
