No, we're not expecting! Are you nuts?! I'm talking about Hermes, our cat. He has been on my mind a lot recently and after my last post I thought what better way to get my thoughts out, then to post on my blog. After keeping him locked up, 24 hours a day for around 5 or 6 days David and I went into his dungeon one night to grab the vaccuum after a swarm of moths invaded our house, and after petting Hermes' head I noticed big bumps all over the place. Once we got some light on the subject and pulled his hair back we saw he had been scratching himself or his head on something so hard that it bled and then scabbed over. I decided that night I would call the next morning and see about getting him into the vet just to make sure it wasn't anything else. Saturday morning we went to see Dr. Schaul and he concluded it wasn't anything serious, but he opted to give him a shot of antibiotics just in case, showed me how to shove these little white pills (Steriod) down his throat, then proceeded to hand me an $80 bill. He made the pill popping look so easy, but after trying at home many, many times with no luck, I came to the conclusion they weren't necessary and the sores will heal in their own time. That was over the holiday weekend, and so far all but 3 of the bumps are gone. The 3 that remain look worse than they ever have and I am at a loss as of what I can do. David refuses to let me spend or himself spend anymore money at the vet, and I am relentlessly thinking about my poor little Hermes, and what pain he may be feeling.
Sometimes I think, maybe having a pet is not a good idea. I would never want to get rid of him and I love almost all animals, but MAN! This one 11 pound animal has caused us lots of grief this last year. I am going to wait it out another week in hopes that his sores heal and I'll continue to brush him, wipe down his head with a warm wash cloth and check the spots often, but if they don't start looking better, I may be making another visit to Cedar Heights Pet Clinic.
Update on cat poop problem: We are now treating Hermes more like a dog. He basically has to tell us when he needs to use the bathroom because we are locking him out of the basement, so that he can't run down and leave a present on our carpet. For those of you who don't know the set up of our house, the basement is where he likes to go #2 and in order to get back to his litterbox he must walk through the finished basement, through a cat door (similar to a doggie door) and his box is situated in the back of the basement, essentially a storage area, which is not carpeted. So far this is working, but it's a lot more work for me. I have to let him out in the morning (we keep him locked up with his box at night and when we're gone) and I have to pay a lot better attention. It's almost like having two babies in the house.
