Omaha, Somewhere in the Middle of America

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter over the past weekend.  My Easter took a surprising, but pleasant turn.  On Friday I got word from my mom that we probably wouldn't be doing Easter dinner because of some business that needed to be taken care of with my grandma, so I thought I'd check with my friend Val to see what she was up to.  Val is one of my best friends from grade school. We share a birthday and have stayed great friends for over 20 years.  She moved to Omaha and I try to visit a few times a year.  With this year being crazy busy and her working weekends, we quickly realized it might be a while before I could make it out there to visit her and her fiance, Luke.  I'll be in her wedding this June and it's sort of become this thing that we're calling it the "Royal Wedding" because for those of you who don't know Val, she likes Fabulous, and that's exactly what this wedding is going to be:)  I get to stand next to her as matron of honor, and I'm getting pretty excited for the big day, Friday, June 17th.

With the role of matron of honor comes the responsibility of being at the bride-to-be's beck and call. Living 4 hours away can make that quite a challenge at times. I'm trying to show my appreciation by co-hosting a killer bachelorette party and bridal shower.  When I called Val on Friday and she told me she didn't have to work this weekend, I thought not only a perfect time for a visit, also the perfect chance to help her with any wedding stuff she needed extra hands for.

After talking it over with the hubby Friday after work, Syrie and I took off for the long car ride on Saturday morning.  Syrie did great, only fussing once, about 45 minutes outside of O-town. We stopped on some deserted exit (looked like something from a scary movie) and I fed her and changed her diaper. I kept looking around for creepers, but luckily we got back on I-80 safely with no problems--I watch too many horror movies.

When we got to Luke and Val's place we hung out for a while, chatted, and decided on where we should go for dinner.  Val always takes me to a new and different place to eat whenever I come to town, so I was excited when we decided on an Italian restaurant, Grisanti's.  Syrie did great at the restaurant. She wants so badly to be a big girl and sit at the table like an adult, eat her meal like an adult and drink from a straw like an adult, haha.  Aside from the occasional reaching for my plate, she just sat on my lap and watched us eat.

We finished the evening at Val's watching tv, drinking from her collection of wine and then to bed we went. The next morning we woke up early (thank you, Syrie), worked on weddding invitations and made Easter dinner.  I may have broken tradition by not spending the holiday with family, but I did get to spend it with good friends.  Syrie and I headed back for Iowa, and what normally would have been a 4 hour drive, ended up being closer to 6 hours.  We stopped at my mom's in Dike, and apparently just in time, as Syrie had made a diahhrea explosion all the way up her side. So after opening some Easter presents from her Grandma and taking a bath, we headed back to Waterloo to see David before he went to work.  David started on 3rd shift, per his request.  We are finding that we actually get more time together as a family when he's on 3rd shift as opposed to 2nd.

Just for fun, here is a short video of Syrie dancing to a song while at Luke and Val's this past weekend

Here is a photo of Val and I in grade school..always goofing off.

And here is a much more recent picture of the two of us in a another friend's wedding

Is it 7:30 yet?!

Life with an 11 mont h old is exhausting.   Yes, it can be exciting, joyful, and yes, I have my proud moments too, but today it’s, well, exhausting. The people around me most often I'm sure would say, I tend to hop on the frustration train the moment Syrie starts to act out or they might say I just get down right angry, and they’re right.   I never claimed to be World’s Greatest Mom, but today I tried another approach. I stayed calm, didn’t lose my cool, and yet still she seems to be impossible to satisfy.   Maybe satisfy isn’t the right word because I’m sure that leaves some of you thinking, I spoil her and give her whatever she wants the second she tears up, but that’s not true either.   I had the television off, phone put away, and all of my attention on her.   I was trying to keep her mind off of whatever it was that made her want to whine and fuss, but nothing worked.   I tried ignoring it, but I’m learning that she doesn’t care what ap...

Her First Overnighter

As many of you have already heard, Syrie had her first overnight stay in the hospital at just under 7 months old.  While it's not what I was expecting Wednesday morning when I was advised to bring her in by her Doctor after finding out she had a high temp, I suppose I should just be grateful it turned out to be nothing.  I've always been one to look at things in the way that, if I'm going to go through all this hassle, there better be a good reason for it, dang it!  At least that's how I always looked at this sort of thing when it happened to me.  Now that I have someone else to worry about, I think about things a little differently, but the thought is always in the back of my mind-some things/attitudes are hard to change. Before Wednesday I really had no idea what a high temperature for a child was.  Since this fiasco, I've learned that babies can stay home with a much higher temp then my little miss endured.  All I knew was that my doctor's nurse told m...

Blood Diamond? Try Gassy Diamond.

With all the weddings in the coming months I decided I better start tanning so that I don't look ghostly in my dresses.  Having a baby makes tanning a little more difficult, so I figured I would squeeze it in on my lunch break, and went for the first time in a long time yesterday.  I typically don't wear jewelry when I go in a tanning bed, but because of the time crunch I decided to leave my wedding ring on.  While getting toasty in the bed I looked down at my ring and under the UV lights to my surprise, the far left diamond on my ring was bright blue--not just the top, but the sides, the entire thing!  I panicked and my mind immediately raced back to February when I got my bands soldered to my engagement ring, and I went home to show David. His response to my ring was, "Your ring looks smaller.  You know, sometimes they switch out diamonds on people."  At the time I thought about it for a second, and then assured myself that that would never happen to me....
