Radiation Impact

Okay, so I know I said in the beginning that this blog would be about my family, but this is one topic that's been on my mind lately and what better way to get it out then to blog. I'm still learning, so be easy on me as some of my facts may not be exact, but let me give you a little history lesson as I understand it to be.... At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, shortly after my first birthday, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant ( Pripyat, Ukraine)  operators committed a fatal series of errors in the control room of Reactor #4, triggering a meltdown and an explosion that resulted in the world's largest nuclear accident to date.  This tragedy, unlike the more recent Fukushima accident was caused by human error.  To be more definite, it was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated by inadequately trained personnel.  This accident caused the largest, uncontrolled radioactive release into the environment ever recorded and was the cause of 30 opera...

Omaha, Somewhere in the Middle of America

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter over the past weekend.  My Easter took a surprising, but pleasant turn.  On Friday I got word from my mom that we probably wouldn't be doing Easter dinner because of some business that needed to be taken care of with my grandma, so I thought I'd check with my friend Val to see what she was up to.  Val is one of my best friends from grade school. We share a birthday and have stayed great friends for over 20 years.  She moved to Omaha and I try to visit a few times a year.  With this year being crazy busy and her working weekends, we quickly realized it might be a while before I could make it out there to visit her and her fiance, Luke.  I'll be in her wedding this June and it's sort of become this thing that we're calling it the "Royal Wedding" because for those of you who don't know Val, she likes Fabulous, and that's exactly what this wedding is going to be:)  I get to stand next to her as ma...

Her First Overnighter

As many of you have already heard, Syrie had her first overnight stay in the hospital at just under 7 months old.  While it's not what I was expecting Wednesday morning when I was advised to bring her in by her Doctor after finding out she had a high temp, I suppose I should just be grateful it turned out to be nothing.  I've always been one to look at things in the way that, if I'm going to go through all this hassle, there better be a good reason for it, dang it!  At least that's how I always looked at this sort of thing when it happened to me.  Now that I have someone else to worry about, I think about things a little differently, but the thought is always in the back of my mind-some things/attitudes are hard to change. Before Wednesday I really had no idea what a high temperature for a child was.  Since this fiasco, I've learned that babies can stay home with a much higher temp then my little miss endured.  All I knew was that my doctor's nurse told m...

No Rest For The Wicked

*Note: Please try not to be worried/concerned about me or Syrie after reading the following blog. In the words of Alexander, I am having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. I was still laying on the couch when I got a text message at 7 am from a friend asking if we could wear jeans to work today. Bad, bad night last night.  Syrie is killing me with this ‘no sleep’ thing she’s got going on. The girl barely takes naps, so you’d think she’d sleep through the night like a pro, but that’s not the case.  I put her to bed every night at 8:30 like clockwork. She’ll sleep for an hour or two and then comes her first round of waking up, crying, not wanting anything other than to be held or put in mom and dad’s bed.  Last night she was in bed by 8:30, then awake already when David rolled in at 11:15 from work. I finally gave up at midnight and let David take over the task of  getting her to go to sleep by rocking her in her room. I was so angry with her, but at the sam...
